I obtained the PhD degree in Biology (specialization in Ecology) from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. At present I am a Principal Researcher at CESAM (Center for Environmental and Marine Studies) and Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, where I develop research mainly in the field of aquatic ecotoxicology.
Within this research area I have been involved in several research projects, both as coordinator and collaborator, that address the impacts on environmental perturbations (e.g., salinization driven by sea-level rise, nanoparticles, among others) on freshwater ecosystems, by means of different model species and evaluating responses at different level of biological organization.
Recently, I also focused my research in the development of alternative methodologies to replace animal experimentation within the context of amphibian risk assessment.
